Structural Electronics - A Business of Tens of Billions of Dollars Within the Coming Decade

Structural electronics  is one of the most important developments this century yet most people have never heard of it. Strange – there are over 37 million items on Google. Two years ago, IEEE published,”3D Printing for Rapid Prototyping of Structural Electronics”. Drayson revealed the “structural battery” in the aerofoil of its pure electric racing car. Tesla amazed us with an empty engine compartment and trunk in its pure electric car – the power train was entirely fitted into the sides and floor.

Fitting things into spare spaces, though it attracts the name, is really only a precursor of structural electronics. As covered in the reports, Future Technology for Hybrid and Pure Electric Cars and Structural Electronics, a much bigger gain comes when existing dumb metal and plastic are not needed because load-bearing electronics and electrics take over. A faster payback and much greater saving in weight and space result. Indeed, many other benefits accrue. Laminar batteries in the wings of an aircraft may not need water cooling because of their shape.

Load-bearing supercapacitors have already been made into a car trunk lid by Imperial College London and Vanderbilt University in the USA and others are doing similar things. Universities rarely use the term structural electronics for what they are doing – they prefer a longer string of words. Building Integrated Photovoltaics BIPV is not yet seen by proponents as a subset of structural electronics even though integral energy storage and circuitry is being explored. From aircraft fuselages having a human-like nervous system to the front panel of your washing machine being the electronics, the terminology is more likely to be manufacturing-oriented such as, “in-mold electronics”.

Nonetheless the big picture is structural electronics taking over from a century of joining components together and putting them in a box. Now is the century of electronic and electrical structures with a very different value chain. Providers of chemicals, laminates, composites, 3D electronic printing, smart skin for structures and, yes, in-mold electronics step forward.

The following pages are taken from the report “Structural Electronics 2015-2025: Applications, Technologies, Forecasts“.  This research appraises the market opportunity, assesses technologies, the competitive landscape, value chain drivers, barriers, case studies and global trends.

The Global Printed Electronics Market Sector Witness Miniaturization

The miniaturization of electronic devices is an upcoming trend in the global electronics market, specifically in the category of printed electronics. The technological advancements which are the primary key drivers of miniaturization of electronic devices have led the market with their efficient developments resulting in more compact and flexible electronic devices.

In that case, printed electronics solutions are considered as the perfect solution for miniaturization in the industry. With the help of this technology, giant companies in the electronics industry can now develop multifarious devices varying in different sizes and materials. Printed devices are robust, efficient in performance – consuming low power, and moderately priced. As a result, worldwide manufacturers have been increasingly approving of printed electronics technology for their particular industrial products.

There are many companies that act as the major key players in the Global Printed Electronics industry, and they are namely NTERA Inc., T-Ink Inc., Novacentrix., and Conductive Inkjet Technology. Speaking of the major drivers in the industry, the increasing need for eco-friendly electronic products is another key driver in the domain of electronics. As printed electronic products use non-hazardous raw materials for producing different electronic devices, it becomes more suitable for the technology to get incorporated with other eco-friendly electronic products.

The Global Printed Electronics market is expected to revolutionize the industry by introducing innovative and low cost products that can be manufactured with traditional silicon-based electronics techniques. The drivers for global printed electronics market are low manufacturing cost and its applicability in variety of substrates. The global printed electronics market is expected to grow at an estimated CAGR of 38% from 2012 to 2018. In Printed electronics industry, screen printing captures maximum share owing to its wise deployment whereas most applications are available in printed photovoltaic (PV) due to the rising demand for alternative energy sources globally.

Printed and Flexible Sensors Market Opportunities

Opportunities in established and emerging markets

Printed and flexible sensors market already represented a value of $6.3 billion in 2013. The biggest market is currently biosensors, where disposable glucose test strips are used to improve the lives of diabetics. However, other types of printed sensors are emerging, taking advantage of the latest materials. By 2024, these emerging applications will take a significant share of the total printed sensor market:

IDTechEx research group expects new hybrid CMOS image sensors to quickly become the second largest market, with organic or quantum dot semiconductors replacing silicon as the photosensitive material in several applications.

Piezoresistive sensing is already an established market. Growth in piezoresistive sensors will however get additional momentum, explained by a combination of favourable trends. While the two biggest market segments are currently in Consumer Electronics and Healthcare, the next five years will see Automotive take a larger share, ultimately outgrowing Healthcare. In this scenario, IDTechEx expects the piezoresistive sensor market to triple by 2018, corresponding to a 23% CAGR.

Other types of printed and flexible sensors such as photodetectors, temperature sensors or gas sensors are only emerging but they promise better performances, new form factors and ease of customisation. Now is the right time to enter the market and some companies are already positioned to reap the benefits.

The complete picture

Save months of research by quickly learning who the key players are in printed and flexible sensors by using the latest information. Get the complete picture on the various technologies, their applications and the market sizes.

The report includes technology reviews and market forecasts until 2024 for the following printed sensors:

• Biosensors

• Capacitive sensors (not including touchscreens)

• Piezoresistive sensors

• Piezoelectric sensors

• Photodetector

• Hybrid CMOS sensors

• Digital X-ray sensors

• Temperature sensors

• Gas sensors

Sensors that are processed at high temperature (ceramic pressure sensors, as well as some types of piezoelectric, temperature and gas sensors) are described in the report but not included in the forecast figures since they cannot be considered part of printed electronics.
